Get that Coat Closet Under Control!

The majority of people will find they use their coat closets to store a number of different things as well as coats. This can become rather unorganized and muddled as time goes on. It will become more and more jumbled over time and can leave you wanting to tidy it but wondering how. It will just mount up until there is no longer any room left to store anything and the task of cleaning it up will seem impossible. The following are some tips on how to lessen the hassle and get started on completing this task.
A good place to start is to actually make a list of the things you dislike about the coat closet. Are you overly frustrated by the growing pile of footwear? Do you have to pull almost everything out to find a matching pair of shoes? Are wet snow boots piled on to the mountain of shoes? This can leave you with a mildew smell that can permeate everything in the closet, including your nice, wool coats. Perhaps you have resorted to plastic drawers in the past and are now finding that you can\’t remember what\’s in them, and can\’t open them enough to see.
It could be a good idea to have more than one rack for coats, if the coat closet is tall enough there is no reason why you can\’t have two levels of coats to open up some storage space. If the top bar is slightly out of reach you can easily get a hanger retriever in order to reach. It will not cost much and you will benefit from double the storage space.
You do not necessarily need a very tall closet if you have children, you can get away with a lower rack at the bottom and store your children\’s clothes there, while using the top rack for adult coats. You could also have two racks running down the left and right side of the closet instead of across the middle. You can then keep shoe racks or shelves along the back. You can have hooks in place for bags and other things you would usually just leave on the floor.
If you truly prefer drawers, stick with clear acrylic ones so that you can still see what is inside the drawer. You can also choose bins and baskets which can help you get organized, and are also attractive. Vacuum storage bags are great for bulky items including quilts, blankets and heavy coats that are out of season. Simply use the hose on your vacuum cleaner to pull the air out of the bags, and you will find that they require far less space.
You can avoid wet shoes or coats making your coat closet smell by using cedar coat hangers. It may feel like a huge task but once your coat closet is clean and tidy it will be one big load off your mind.
